There are many kinds of mothers: single mothers, married mothers, widowed mothers, single dads, grandmothers, grandfathers, nannies, friends.

The beloved title of “mother” is not simply a biological one. It represents that valued ability to love unconditionally and nurture into adulthood those you care for. In many ways, my grandmother was a mother to me. As were my youth sponsors at church.

I was lucky to have so many “mothers,” no matter what sex, loving and nurturing me in my life. Sometimes, motherhood takes a village.

My biological mother was a force to be reckoned with. She was strong and talented and the epitome of compassion. She was my rock.

It’s hard for me to talk about my mom without tears creeping into my blue eyes. Tears of joy and love. Everything I am, I owe to my mom. And then to grandma. And extending out to all the feminine energy that surrounded me in protection, guidance, and…love.

Thanks mommy, and all my moms, for teaching me the integrity, honesty, compassion, and work ethic I value so much. It makes me who I Am. I learned well from you, and I like who I am because of your teachings and modeling. I am able to love myself more because of the person you taught me to be.

I celebrate being a mom now, and passing along the courage, compassion and love that I was taught with grace.

Yes, I am a biological mother. I also know I have been a mom, in one way or another, to friends, students, Gabrielle’s friends, fellow actors, and certainly lots and lots of rescue doggies.

I like being the mom. I like to nurture. I like to give

Thank you to all the moms who raised me, and all the souls that have allowed me to be the mom.

I choose to see a world full of moms who nurture, support and love each other into the greatest humans we can be.

What a wonderful world!

Blessings,
Dee
